The Journey

What is “The Journey”?

“The Journey” is a discipleship process that we have created to help further the growth of our partners at Journey Community Church. It is intended to help those who have trusted Jesus with their Salvation become more and more like Him.

Your “Journey” begins with a Spiritual Growth Assessment to help you see where you are in your spiritual walk with Christ. The assessment is for your information and is meant to be a guide in the process. We are all in different places in our “Journey” and there is no judgment. The only goal is to help you grow to be more like Christ.

“The Journey” is laid out like a freeway with mile markers. Each milepost helps you gauge where you are in becoming more like Christ. Every class/seminar we offer will have a milepost marking – from Milepost 0 to Milepost 4. After your Spiritual Growth Assessment, you should have a good idea of what classes will suit you best. You may notice in the illustration that the freeway never ends. This is on purpose with the idea that we can/should never stop growing and learning.

At each milepost there is a pre-requisite class that will be required for all. This is an introductory-type class that explains the classes to follow and gives you a better idea of what can be expected. The pre-requisite classes are only a few hours in length and once taken, will never need to be taken again. All classes, including pre-requisites, are offered periodically and will be clearly labeled as to which category they belong. We will typically offer 2 or 3 classes per quarter.

An Explanation of the Mileposts

Milepost 0 – Becoming a Partner

These classes are meant for those who are curious or just beginning their “Journey” with Christ. At this level, we offer classes such as: I Want to Know More About Journey, I Want to Know Jesus, and I Want to be Baptized.

Milepost 1 – Becoming a Committed Partner

Classes in the Milepost 1 category are meant for those who have already accepted Jesus as their personal Savior and now want to know how they can begin their Spiritual Journey with Him. This is a fundamentals category on the “how to-s” of the Christian faith. Examples of classes offered here are: I Want to Study the Bible, I Want to Learn How to Pray, I Want to Experience Worship, etc.

Milepost 2 – Becoming a Growing Partner

Milepost 2 classes offer a deeper study into the Christian walk. Classes offered in this category will typically be either Bible Studies or Topical Studies. During your Spiritual Assessment, you will discover areas for growth. We recommend taking classes in this category that correspond with those areas. Examples: Book Study of Ruth, Book Study of the Gospel of John, Study on Spiritual Gifts, A Deeper Study on Prayer, etc.

Milepost 3 – Becoming an Active Partner

The pre-requisite class in this category will require that everyone take another assessment to help them find their “sweet spot” for ministry. Our goal for Milepost 3 is to help you discover what God has specifically designed you to do for His Kingdom. You will discover different areas where you can serve in the church and areas where you can serve in the community. This category will get you moving and living out your faith in practical ways – discovering your personal gifts and giving you opportunity to use your talents for Christ.

Milepost 4 – Becoming a Partner on Mission

The Milepost 4 category is for those partners who have fully surrendered their lives to Christ. In this category, you will not only be looking for ways to serve, but you will be making it a lifestyle. This category is for partners who are mature in their faith, understand what they believe, and may even be thinking of making ministry a career. Classes in this category will challenge our partners to become even more like Christ by becoming “Kingdom-minded” followers.

Do I have to stay at my Milepost?

Once you have discovered the Milepost that suits you best and have taken the pre-requisite class, you are free to continue taking classes at the lower Mileposts. For example: if you are at Milepost 3 but would like to take a Milepost 2 class; that is perfectly acceptable. There may be classes offered periodically at the lower levels that will help you continue to grow. You are encouraged to take those classes. We only ask that you do not take classes that are above your Milepost level without first taking the pre-requisite class.

It is important that everyone grow at their own pace. Don’t make your “Journey” a sprint. Learning to be more like Christ is a marathon and there is a lot we can discover on the path.

Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a huge crowd of witnesses to the life of faith, let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily trips us up. And let us run with endurance the race God has set before us.

– Hebrews 12:1

I press on to reach the end of the race and receive the heavenly prize for which God, through Christ Jesus, is calling us.

– Philippians 3:14
